How can you prepare?
First and foremost, comfort is key. When it comes to outdoor sessions, it’s best to wear comfortable clothes that you’re not worried about getting a little dirty. After all, we’ll be out in nature, and you may find yourself sitting or lying on the grass. Opt for clothing that allows you to move freely and be at ease. Closed-toe shoes are highly recommended to protect your feet from prickles and sandy soil that may be present at the farm.
While comfort is important, it’s also worth considering the colours and patterns of your clothing. Although there are no hard and fast rules, it’s generally advisable to avoid very bright, loud patterns, and extremely dark colours as they may not photograph as well. However, keep in mind that these are just general recommendations. The most important aspect is for your session to reflect your individuality and the unique bond you share with your animals.
If you’re unsure about being in the photos yourself, don’t worry! I highly encourage everyone to participate (but don’t worry, I won’t make you!). I have yet to meet a person who hasn’t been thrilled with the outcome of a few photos taken alongside their precious pets. You don’t need to dress up or do anything special; simply come prepared to cuddle with your furry friend and enjoy a leisurely walk around the farm.
How to prepare your pet
Now, let’s shift our focus to your pets. It’s crucial to ensure that they are clean and tidy for the session. Pay close attention to areas around their ears, eyes, and mouths, ensuring they are free from dirt and debris. Ideally, give them a bath and dry them before the session. However, if time doesn’t allow, a gentle wipe down with pet wipes and a good brush will suffice. Remember, the goal is to capture the essence of your pet, so a clean and well-groomed appearance will enhance their natural beauty. Don’t worry too much about any eye gunk or fluff during your session, I take care of this when you choose your final photos.
When it comes to equipment such as leashes, make sure they are of good quality and clean. I have the ability to edit out leashes and collars in post-production, but sometimes a nicely designed leash can add a touch of elegance to certain photos. So, if you have a leash that you adore, feel free to bring it along.
To make the session even more enjoyable for your pets, consider bringing something special that they adore—a favourite toy or a particular treat that lights up their eyes. I provide a variety of treats, toys, and water bowls with rainwater. If your pet has any specific dietary or water requirements, please inform me in advance, so I can accommodate their needs.
Other notes to consider
It’s important to note that there is a pony in a nearby paddock to where the photos are taken. This friendly pony loves to come over and say hello. However, if your pet may be scared or uncomfortable around ponies, please notify me ahead of time, and I will happily move the pony to a different paddock for the duration of your session. The safety and comfort of your pets are of utmost importance.
Lastly, if you’re bringing a small animal like a cat or a rabbit, ensure that you have a secure carrier for them. It’s also advisable to have them in a harness during the session. Even if your pet is nervous or timid, I take great care in creating a safe and enjoyable environment for them. I understand the importance of being extra cautious when working with smaller animals.
